The closed loop
The mushrooms and strawberries share a growing cycle. After a mushroom crop, we use its spent growing material to make vermicompost for the strawberry towers.
The mushrooms grow on pasteurised substrate in a dark room with controlled humidity. When a crop finishes, the spent substrate goes to the worm beds. The worms work it into vermicompost, which we use in the strawberry towers in the greenhouse.
We use predatory mites in the greenhouse as part of our integrated pest management programme. They help control pests among the strawberry plants.
